ingredients to make homemade black bean burgers

Ingredients in a black bean burger

  • black beans
  • onion
  • garlic
  • egg
  • panko style bread crumbs
  • oat flour
  • powdered parmesan
  • spices

How to make black bean burgers

Step 1: Add the drained black beans, garlic cloves, and chopped onion to a food processor.

Process until the garlic and onion are combined, and the mixture looks like refried beans.

You want to make sure that there are no big chunks of onion or garlic remaining.

Step 2: Use a rubber spatula to remove the bean mixture from the food processor and into a large mixing bowl.

To the mixing bowl, add your remaining ingredients:

1 egg, panko style bread crumbs, oat flour, powdered parmesan, cumin, salt, pepper, paprika, and chili powder.

If you do not have oat flour, simply place regular rolled oats into your food processor or high speed blender and grind them up into flour.

What holds black bean burgers together?

A combination of oat flour (ground up rolled oats) and bread crumbs are perfect for holding the burgers together.

When paired with our binder (the egg), these bean burgers form a great shape and don’t fall apart!

Step 3: Mix the ingredients together until combined.

Use your hands to shape the batter into 6 black bean burgers, then place onto parchment paper or a plate so that they are ready to cook.

For a thicker burger, you can make 5 burgers instead of 6.

Step 4: Heat a skillet with olive oil, then place your black bean burgers in it.

Cook on each side for 5 – 8 minutes, until browned and crispy on both sides.

Use a spatula to flatten the burgers into the pan for optimal crisp.

These burgers are the perfect texture, and don’t fall apart, which is a big problem with a lot of veggie burgers.

    1. I just pulse some old fashioned oats into flour. You can do it in the food processor before you puree the black beans.

  1. I don’t want to buy oat flower, simply for this recipe. Can I use oatmeal and process it in my food processor until it is like flour?

    1. Yes! Just use rolled oats (also called old fashioned oats) and blend them into flour, that is all oat flour is.

  2. Can I freeze the black bean burgers and then cook them later? Or cook them, then freeze and then reheat in the skillet?

      1. Make, fry, freeze, bake. I’m single, so I make these ahead of time, pop them in the freezer, remove and store in a ziploc bag, and take them out as needed. Bake at 300°-350° flipping over midway. I add cheese to mine towards the end.

    1. @Rachel, YES! They freeze wonderfully. Just put on parchment paper to separate or freeze individually, which is what I do and take them out as needed.
