Iron Mountain is one of his favorite races. It’s in a gorgeous town with tons of trails, you always see people biking and running. Last year Robbie did the 50 miler and loved it. This year he has been so slammed that he hasn’t had as much time to train, so he decided to do the 30 miler. Iron Mountain has a 16 miler, a 30 miler, and a 50 miler that all happen the same day.
Last year Iron Mountain was awesome and miserable for me. We got up at 2 a.m., drove 3 hours, he ran 10 hours, then we drove the 3 hours back home. Let me just say….NEVER. AGAIN. Seriously though, it was awful. I was worried we would crash because my eyes would not stay open. This year we decided that it would be well worth it to get a hotel room the night before the race, I’m so glad we did!
Soon it was time to line up and they were off! After I watched him leave, I got back in the car and headed back to the hotel for a little while. Checkout wasn’t til 11, so I watched I Love Lucy reruns in bed and snacked on kettlecorn at 9 a.m. – not complaining!
After checking out of the hotel, I knew I needed to find something to eat. I didn’t feel like wasting money eating somewhere nice, so I decided to test my (poor) navigation skills and find the local Kroger. Robbie’s races have actually been really good for me and push me out of my comfort zone. I used to never drive much outside of Lynchburg but now I navigate (and get lost sometimes) to and from his races.
He ran in with his friend Gina. He told me that they were able to run the whole race together. I was so excited for him. I know how much he loves having someone to run with and push him, so I was so glad that Gina’s pace matched his!
Last year at Iron Mountain he had to lay down as soon as he crossed the finish line because his stomach was so upset. This year he felt awesome! Taking tailwind in his pack has really been amazing for him.
