How to make brownies from cake mix

Step 1: Add the chocolate fudge cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips to a large bowl. Use a rubber spatula to mix the batter until it is completely combined.

For this recipe, I used Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge, but any chocolate cake mix will work.

Step 2: Spray an 8X8 baking dish with cooking spray, then add the brownie batter in.

Smush it down into the edges, and flatten out any lumps using a rubber spatula.

Step 3: Bake the brownies at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Allow them to cool completely before cutting for easiest results. If you’re like me, this is pretty much impossible!

  1. These turned out great! I used chocolate fudge cake mix. They turned out super fudgy in the center of the pan, with the right amount of crunchy bits around the edges. The top crisped up beautifully too. Tastes great later on in the day warmed up for 15 seconds. I would argue this is an excellent recipe for 2020 home days!

  2. I have a box of chocolate cake mix that is 2/3 full. I used 1/3 for a marble cake using one egg since the recipe calls for 3 on the box. I want to use the rest of it for this recipe but do I adjust the eggs accordingly? How do I split the 2 eggs? What will happen if I just use the 2 eggs but the box is technically only 2/3 full?

    1. @Dina, this brownie recipe calls for one egg. You can still use the mix with one egg. I would decrease the other ingredients buy 1/3rd and after mixing it see if it’s a good consistency. If not, add more wet ingredients by the tablespoon, mix again, and so on.

Really, I’d just add a whole new box with the 2/3rds box. They’d get eaten here!

    1. @Lillian Loar,
I used a mini cupcake pan and my air fryer set on bake at 325 degrees, it took only 8 mins to cook them perfectly.

  3. You don’t need to worry about the direction’s on the box….just the 5 ingredients she posted….hope that helps make it clearer…..happy cooking from Grandmuv’s

  4. Hi,

Are the eggs additional to the eggs already called for in the box instructions or just 2 eggs total? Not sure if it’s 2 or 4 eggs coz most boxes cake mix already call for 2 eggs.

  5. I have never commented online for a recipe before, but this one is sooo good I had to comment! I doubled the recipe and baked in a 13×9 pan for exactly 25 mins. These taste like the fancy brownies you would buy in a bakery. I am shocked at how good these are. Homerun! Thank you!

  6. This recipe was amazing. I used canola oil and baked 25 mins. Only complaint is they were a little to gooey
