Cake mix are a favorite dessert in our house. It’s such a great time saver for making recipes in much less time! These cake mix brownies are perfect for when you are craving brownies but don’t have any brownie mix or the time to make them from scratch.
This recipe uses dark chocolate fudge cake mix for a rich and super chocolatey brownie that tastes amazing!
Ingredients & Notes
- Chocolate cake mix
- olive oil: or substitute vegetable oil or another neutral cooking oil
- vanilla extract
- chocolate chips: mix and match chocolate chip types for more flavor combinations!
While I love a good dessert made from scratch, sometimes you need those quick and fast recipes that you can whip up in no time!
How to make brownies from cake mix
Step 1: Add the chocolate fudge cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips to a large bowl. Use a rubber spatula or spoon to mix the batter until it is completely combined.
For this recipe, I used Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge, but any chocolate cake mix will work.
Step 2: Spray an 8 X 8 baking dish with cooking spray, then add the brownie batter in.
Smush it down into the edges, and flatten out any lumps.
Step 3: Bake the brownies at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, around 20 – 25 minutes!
Allow them to cool completely before cutting for easiest results. If you’re like me, this is pretty much impossible!

Ingredients
- 15 oz box chocolate cake mix, I used Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge
- 1/2 cup oil , olive oil or vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Add the chocolate cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and semi sweet chocolate chips to a bowl and use a rubber spatula to mix until well combined.
- Transfer the cake mix brownie batter to a greased 8 X 8 baking dish. Flatten down the batter into the pan using the rubber spatula
- Bake the brownies at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean (mine were perfect right at 25 minutes)
- For best results, allow the cake mix brownies to cool completely before cutting
My kids wanted brownies and I had already heard of making them out of cake mix so I tried it. I didn’t have any chocolate chips so I used Milo and they turned out divinely!!

I made with Bettys choc cake mix and added two teaspoons of instant coffee along with your ingredients. Stole a warm one and it was gooey and perfect.

I needed to make brownies for a small group of people, but all I had to work with was cake mix, not brownie mix. I made these, and oh. my. word! They are so moist and delicious!! I will make these instead of brownie mix from now on!!

My husband requested brownies yesterday for his Father’s Day dessert. Like everyone else here I found myself without a brownie mix, but lots of chocolate cake mixes on hand, so rather than google a brownie recipe I googled for a cake mix brownie mix and decided to give this one a try. I doubled the recipe because the glass dish I pulled out to use was a big 9×13 size. I used two boxes of the Devil’s food chocolate, and doubled your ingredient list. I used Milk chocolate chips. I followed all the instructions and they turned out great! The time of 25 minutes was perfect. My husband got his Brownies and I was out of the kitchen in a snap! I’m making this recipe using the Betty devils cake mix and I’m not sure if it’ll just taste like cake or brownies. Anyone have any tips on how to make it more brownie and fudgie?
@Joelle, maybe try adding 1/4 cup of milk?????? I hear using milk makes it more dense.

Be sure to us oil instead of butter.
The recipe is quite easy and I baked them up in 20 minutes using convection. I found a slight taste of baking soda in them – anyone else find this?
My family loved them and didn’t notice but any tips to remove or reduce this would be great.
