You can use any flavor of cake mix and add in different mix ins. There are so many flavor possibilities that you could make with this recipe as a base.
I have made them for birthday parties, Christmas, dinner gatherings, graduations, and more. Basically any time I am asked to bring a dessert!
You can find the full recipe and instructions at the bottom of this post, but here’s what you’ll need to make it.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- yellow cake mix: or any flavor cake mix
- eggs
- oil: any neutral oil like olive oil or vegetable oil
- chocolate chips
How to make cake mix cookie bars
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Beat the eggs in a small bowl. Add the cake mix and oil to the beaten eggs and mix well to combine.
Step 2: Beat in the chocolate chips (the batter will be very thick).
Step 3: Grease a 9 X 13 baking dish with cooking spray. Spread the cookie bar batter evenly in the dish (this will take several minutes to spread evenly).
Recipe Tip
Use wet or greased hands or a rubber spatula to spread the batter into the dish. The batter is very thick and this will make it a little easier to spread!
Step 4: Bake the cookie bars at 350 degrees for 20 – 25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Once cooled, cut the cookie bars into squares.
Serve warm with ice cream for an extra delicious treat!
If you’ve never made these before, you will be surprised at just how good they are!
The texture of these bars is the thickness of a brownie with the taste of a chocolate chip cookie. They’re just so fun to eat and really satisfying and thick and chocolatey.
Storing
Leftover cake mix bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days, if they last that long!

Notes
- The batter will be thick and hard to spread (this is normal) I found that using a rubber spatula and a spoon made it easier to spread into the pan. It may take a couple minutes, but it’s so worth it!
- The thickness of the cookie bars will depend on how large of a baking dish you use.
I love this simple recipe and make it often. I use the bag that the cake mix comes in to spread/flatten the dough in the pan. After putting dough in the pan I simply lay the bag on top and use my hands to spread the dough The bag is like waxed paper and doesn’t stick. So much easier!
@Lisa, excellent tip, worked perfectly, ty
@Lisa, this is the best tip! It worked like a charm!
Can one add carmel baking bits
Iโve made this recipe before and itโs good. I used yellow cake mix with dark chocolate chips and toffee chips.
They were amazing!! I had an unexpected phone call, from a close friend, that she was inviting herself for a dinner, here at my place the next day!! It’s a long story, but I think that you get the drift of it! Panic buttons start going off everywhere!
Needless to say, I had to do the baking first! I found this recipe in faves, and BINGO, that was the one! I thought that I might, try tweeking it a bit! So I substituted half of the chocolate chips with raspberry chips! I used a Pyrex glass, (13×9″) dish, and baked it for 23 minutes. I then drizzled melted chocolate over the top for a “fancy”, look. I served it with the half white, the half chocolate ice cream, topped with some fresh raspberries!
They were a huge hit!!! So I thank you for this recipe, and putting smiles on everyones faces!!!! “The recipe that cannot stop giving!”
That sounds delicious!
Absolutely delicious and a quick and easy last minute dessert!!! 9×13 pan creates the perfect thickness and using a greased spatula makes it way easier to flatten the dough. Thanks for a great recipe!!!
Quick and yummy snack, made with devils food cake mix and butterscotch chips. ๐
I just made these today and it was so easy and has incredible texture – a little crisp on the outside/top and soft/chewy on the inside! I downed 3 pieces… save me! I used lemon cake mix, added a tablespoon of poppyseeds, added half milk chocolate and half yogourt chips. I’m going to make this in every flavour for Christmas! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
I made these for a church dinner. I did two batches, one with yellow cake mix and the other with Milk Chocolate cake mix and both with Semi-sweet chocolate chips. I cooked them longer than the 20 min because I couldnโt get the clean toothpick test to come out. I was expecting a brownie texture but they were harder like a cookie. I loved how easy it was to make and will try them again and just cook them for less time. I always have the ingredients on hand so that makes this a great recipe to keep.
If you grease a spatula before you spread these take no time to get in the pan. Love these bars we have been making them for almost two years!
I made this last night. We like a Nike, thick, gooey cookie, so I used 2 cake mixes in a 9*13 pan and doubled everything. I did 2 boxes of a white cake mix, but added a teaspoon of cocoa powder, vanilla, and some brown sugar to the recipe. I used part butter, part olive oil and part veg oil. And I added a bag of chocolate chips. These cookie bars will be long gone before the end of today I am sure. A definite hit!
@Sarah, how long did you bake them for with a double box
