Homemade Teriyaki Sauce is our go-to sauce for marinades and stir fry recipes. This recipe tastes so much better than store bought and you can make it yourself with easy ingredients!

This Homemade Teriyaki Sauce Recipe is so delicious!
Teriyaki sauce is such a delicious simple recipe to make at home.
I don’t know about you, but I am always consistently disappointed with store bought teriyaki sauce. I just don’t find the flavor to be anything special.
Making your own teriyaki sauce is quick, easy, and so flavorful! Once you try this recipe, you won’t go back.
This sauce comes together in less than 15 minutes making it perfect for a quick dinner or marinade! It is so simple to throw together and made with only 8 ingredients.

You can find the full recipe and instructions at the bottom of this post, but here’s what you will need to make this sauce.
Ingredients You Will Need
- Soy sauce
- Orange juice: you can also substitute pineapple juice
- Brown sugar
- Rice Vinegar
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Corn starch
- Cold water

For this recipe, we use orange juice along with fresh garlic and minced ginger to really make the flavor pop.
Fresh squeezed orange juice would be even more delicious if you have it on hand, but it’s not required!
Recipe Tip
Don’t have orange juice or just want to try something new? You can substitute pineapple juice in an equal amount for the orange juice in this recipe.
I do not recommend using garlic powder or powdered ginger because the flavor is not the same. The fresh ingredients are what really give it the great flavor!

Make it gluten free
To make this teriyaki sauce gluten free, all you need to do is substitute gluten free soy sauce or tamari for the regular soy sauce. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten free.
How to make Teriyaki Sauce
Step 1: In a sauce pan, combine the soy sauce, orange juice, water, brown sugar, fresh ginger, and minced garlic.
Step 2: Heat the sauce until the brown sugar dissolves, stirring often, for around 5 minutes.

How to thicken teriyaki sauce
Step 3: In a bowl, mix together the corn starch and cold water to make the slurry. This is what helps get the sauce to the desired thickness.
It make the sauce that perfect sticky thick texture just like a store bought sauce. Your sauce will start out thin. The slurry will thicken it up quickly!

Step 4: Add the corn starch slurry to the teriyaki sauce and whisk or stir for 3 – 5 minutes, as the sauce thickens.
Once the teriyaki sauce is finished, use it as marinade or pour it on your favorite stir fry recipe.

This sauce is so delicious and really so quick to throw together. If you have never made teriyaki before, you will really be surprised at how simple it is!

Storing
This sauce can easily be made ahead and used for dinner later that day. Just make the recipe, and place in a mason jar with a lid to seal it.
Pop it in the fridge and use it when you are ready! Leftover teriyaki sauce will keep in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

Is it possible to can this recipe?
I do not have experience in canning so unfortunately I’m not able to answer that.
@Julie,
I think it would be fine to can. I would suggest adding some lemon juice to ramp up the acid level.
So yummy and easy, Tossed my chicken wings with this sauce. Finger licking good. Sliced some Kielbasa and simmered in the leftover sauce. Yummy!!
@Donna Rioux, That does sound yummy!
This looks very achievable and delish! Can I sub soy sauce for liquid aminos?
I haven’t tried it but I think that would work just fine!
This Teriyaki sauce is my favorite! It’s really delicious and flavorful. Glad I got to get an authentic rice vinegar in Karman Foods.
Looks yummy, I have my chicken marinating in it now.
Do you think it could be frozen and thawed?
It looks so easy to make. I can’t wait to make my own teriyaki sauce. Thank you for sharing this recipe! 🙂
It really is so easy! Enjoy 🙂
Hi, I’m wondering how long it would stay good for in the fridge? I made it for a one serving meal, and I’d hate to wage the rest if I don’t have to. Thanks for the recipe!
I would suggest using leftovers within 3-5 days. Enjoy!
It is important to add rice vinegar??
It helps cut the sweetness of the sauce and give it that authentic taste.
Very good teriyaki! Thanks!!
