While I love a good dessert made from scratch, sometimes you need those secret weapon recipes to throw together a crowd pleasing dessert in only minutes.

How to make brownies from cake mix

Step 1: Add the chocolate fudge cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips to a large bowl. Use a rubber spatula or spoon to mix the batter until it is completely combined.

For this recipe, I used Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge, but any chocolate cake mix will work.

Step 2: Spray an 8 X 8 baking dish with cooking spray, then add the brownie batter in.

Smush it down into the edges, and flatten out any lumps.

Step 3: Bake the brownies at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, around 20 – 25 minutes!

Allow them to cool completely before cutting for easiest results. If you’re like me, this is pretty much impossible!

I have been known to ruin batches of brownies because I just couldn’t wait to dig in and try one.

Share these at a party, with your friends and neighbors, or just make it for yourself when you deserve a treat.

  1. Hi! I am still obsessed with this recipe! Lol I’ve tried it with strawberry cake mix and white choc chips. It was a hit! Also, I used a small cookie scoop and put in mini muffin pans. Baked at 350 for 8-10 min and it makes them into mini brownie bites!! QUESTION- best way to store these and for how long? Thanks in advance!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Cake mix brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days.

  2. Allow to cool, is the operative task here. Too soon and you seem to get what appears to be undercooked mess. Fresh out of the oven could be a topping for ice cream though…

Mixing this batter is a workout in itself….

  3. Swapped out the chocolate cake mix for the orange supreme one and added about 1/2 more chocolate chips….oh my goodness is this yummy!

  4. Hi. I’m making this recipe tomorrow and realized I picked up a box of chocolate fudge cake mix instead of DARK chocolate fudge. Do you think it will make much of a difference?
I can cook, but I am not a baker, so this is perfect for me. Thank you for posting!

  5. This is so great! I’m definitely more of a brownie the cake fan, but brownie mix is over double the price of cake mix

  6. Tried this tonight using a yellow cake mix, white chocolate chips and pecans… Amazing!!! Gooey in the inside and crunchy on the outside. Served warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. Definitely a hit with my husband. Thank you!!

  7. This is the best easiest recipe for brownies. I used a yellow cake mix with chocolate chips it was very good for like white brownies.
    .

  8. I just made a double batch in a 9×13 pan. BIG brownies. Gooey goodness. Used one choc cake mix and one white cake mix 4eggs, 1.33 cup oil and 3tbsp vanilla. Oh my!!!!

    1. @Dan Adam,
To clarify did you use 1 & 1/3 C oil??
      Thanks in advance.
I’m attempting to make my own version tonight. I’ll let you know what adjustments worked best!

  9. Made this last week, my husband loved them! This week we are trying with vanilla cake mix and white chocolate chips!
