How to make brownies from cake mix

Step 1: Add the chocolate fudge cake mix, oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips to a large bowl. Use a rubber spatula or spoon to mix the batter until it is completely combined.

For this recipe, I used Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge, but any chocolate cake mix will work.

Step 2: Spray an 8 X 8 baking dish with cooking spray, then add the brownie batter in.

Smush it down into the edges, and flatten out any lumps.

Step 3: Bake the brownies at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted comes out clean, around 20 – 25 minutes!

Allow them to cool completely before cutting for easiest results. If you’re like me, this is pretty much impossible!

  1. Found this recipe when my hubby wanted brownies and all I had were cake mixes. Didn’t even have an 8 X 8 pan to bake in. used a round cake pan. He loved them and bought 10 cake mixes so I can make brownies all the time. LOL

      1. 5 stars
This was awesome for my husband and son to take on an unexpected road trip from Colorado to Massachusetts. All I had was this box and no cupcake liners. Pivoted to brownies and they were perfect! Just right as a non messy chocolate treat for the road. Thanks so much!

  2. I always make these brownies, THEY’RE SO GOOD! They’re perfectly cooked through, and even if you measure wrong, the recipe is very forgiving. I normally add a lot more chocolate chips and vanilla extract than the recipe recommends, but it’s always so good. One tip of advice, when you poke a knife or toothpick in, you might hit a chocolate chip. My first couple of times, I thought they were uncooked dough, and cooked the brownies a few extra minutes. This recipe is innovative, and always so good. I make them after every trip to Aldis and they don’t last more than a week.

  3. So when i went to add the choc chips they were MIA… someone had kyped them.. sooo. i added a Tablespoon of instant coffee and sprinkled the top with sliced almonds and mnm minis… waiting patiently for the ding…. ok not so patiently for the ding… I think i might drizzle a little chocolate sauce on the top… why is this thing not dinging !!! oh and i think there is a bit of caramel sauce left from thanksgiving, I could drizzle that on as well…. mom will want some ready whip on hers… common toaster oven … do the thing.. make the ding… I will try to wait 10 minutes for them to cool… but not promises… DING !!!! gotta go !!! so excited…

  4. I made this recipe yesterday with these changes: I used sugar free cake mix. I couldn’t find sugar free chocolate chips at the store, so I excluded the chocolate chips, but I chopped up a bunch of walnuts instead. Cooking time and everything else is the same. They were wonderful and very yummy! I will do this again and again.

    1. @Selena, thanks. I’m using the sugar free cake mix as well. It still has carbs but less. I’m using pecans. It seems like a versatile recipe.

  5. Made these this morning with Red Velvet cake mix. I took 1/2 cup of the cake mix and added 1/2 brick cream cheese to that. Dollaped on top and baked. Yummy

  6. Hiiiiii! I just made this recipe, i felt kinda weird tho bc i usually make from scratch but bc i couldn’t find cocoa powder (which i swear i just bought!) i tried this, I used choco-chunks and added an extra handful then sprinkled more on top(im a chocolate addict as you an see), and added a lil milk too I followed the rest of the instructions other than that. Exactly 25 mins 350 degrees worked perfect! And OMG it came out AMAZING!!!! super moist and chocolaty i 100% recommend letting cool for about 10 min! thx for the recipe!
