These cake mix cookies are the best easy dessert!

Cake mix cookies are the easiest chocolate chip cookie recipe ever. We are a big fan of cake mix desserts as a time saving hack!

With just 4 ingredients and a few minutes of time, you can have yourself a warm gooey chocolate chip cookie in a fraction of the time.

It’s a great way to make a dessert that tastes homemade but uses a box of cake mix as the main ingredient: something that most of us have on hand in our pantry!

Ingredients you will need

  • Box of yellow cake mix: any brand you like. You will need the 15 oz size.
  • Eggs
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil: I prefer olive oil in recipes as I always keep it on hand, but any neutral flavored cooking oil will work in this recipe.
  • Chocolate chips: we like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips for a more classic taste, but dark chocolate would also be delicious!

How to make cake mix chocolate chip cookies

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Mix together the yellow cake mix, oil, and eggs in a bowl. The batter should be thick. Fold the chocolate chips into the batter using a rubber spatula.

Step 3: Place spoonfuls of batter onto a baking sheet, then top each one with extra chocolate chips on top.

Recipe Tip

I like to use a mini cookie scoop for this step as it makes it so much easier to portion out the batter.

Step 4: Bake the chocolate chip cookies at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes, then transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Recipe variations

The great thing about this recipe is there are so many fun ways you can change up the flavors!

  • Use a flavor of cake mix: try vanilla cake mix, funfetti cake mix, white cake mix, etc.
  • Switch up the mix ins: want to try something other than regular chocolate chips? Try spinkles, chopped up candy pieces, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips, heath bits, reese’s pieces, whatever sounds good!

These were so good and so easy, plus I love how they were not flat like so many other chocolate chip cookies recipes.

I only used 1 cup of chocolate chips, and I felt that was plenty.

My granddaughter is 10 and starting to bake, so I gave her this recipe.

    1. yes, mine were as well. the 2nd time I made them, I shortened the cooking time by 3 minutes. and they were much better. They appeared as if they weren’t quite done, but they were perfect and chewy.

I did better to make the original chocolate chip cookies the old fashioned way. Didn’t like this recipe, too dry and not chocolate chip chewed. I’ll be throwing these out.

    1. Did you check your cake mix box size? These should not be dry. I’m sorry you did not enjoy them, please let me know if I can help troubleshoot!

  3. WOW!! I just finished baking my cookies—–and I’m going to have to hide them! My husband is loving them! And he isn’t even a “sweet” eater. I used a box of yellow mix and added milk chocolate chips!! SO easy and SO good! We are both 89 years old, and appreciate easy recipes! I’ll be looking at your site often!

I wasn’t sure what to bake, so I tried to find a good, quick & easy recipe that included chocolate chips! I actually made these cookies with mini semisweet chips & they came out excellent! My fiancĂ© & 8 year old daughter agree. Super simple & tasty. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

  5. I made these cookies with butterscotch chips! Our 4 year old Grandson claimed the container as “his”. He finished up his batch from Christmas so he and Pap are making more after pre-school. What an easy cookie recipe, what a hit very yummy.
