The full recipe and instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here are the ingredients that you will need.
Ingredient Notes
- mayo: regular mayonnaise
- bbq sauce: regular bbq sauce, not spicy
- mustard: plain mustard
- honey: just a little bit to sweeten
Recipe Tip
I have found that using a whisk results in the perfect creaminess and lets the mayo combine completely into the sauce. Sometimes a spoon won’t be able to mix it quite as well. Just whisk together the mayo, mustard, bbq sauce, and honey in a bowl and serve!
It’s really that easy. No fancy ingredients. Probably all stuff that you already have on hand!
What to serve it with
- chicken nuggets or plant based nuggets
- Air Fryer Tofu Nuggets
- waffle fries
- Air Fryer Frozen French Fries
- Chickpea Nuggets
I’m a vegetarian, so we had ours with store bought vegetarian chicken nuggets and a bag of waffle fries. Whatever your style, this sauce is perfect for enjoying Chick fil a from the comfort of your kitchen!

How do you thicken it? It tastes just like chick fil a sauce but is so runny. It needs a thickener of some sort.
@Erin Alderson, You could use some flour or -if you have it- pectin.
My daughter thought it needed a tad bit more mustard. But good! I like mayo and bbq sauce mixed together for my french fries.
Good recipe. I added a bit of sriracha and it is perfect.
This is pretty good but, if you add a little lemon juice, a little vinegar, and garlic powder it tastes even more like chick-fil-a.
This is probably fairly accurate to the original. I was an employee of the inventor of the recipe, Hugh Fleming. He discovered it in the mid 1980’s in Spotsylvania VA. It was kind of discovered accidentally when sauces were inadvertently mixed together on a plate and someone dipped their nuggets in it. I am sure it was doctored after this, but as far as I know, it was sauces that we had on hand. Couldn’t keep the fresh stuff in stock. It was flying out the fridge pretty much from Day 1. Many years later, Mr. Fleming gave it to corporate, who packaged it and rolled it out to all Chick Fil A’s . The fresh stuff was even better though.
Made this before but this time didn’t have any mayo I substituted it with sour cream. It was just as good maybe even better! Used Kansas City BBQ sauce also…..
This recipe is very good. My husband said it’s even better than Chick Fil A sauce.
Thank you so much! Have a semi picky kid who only eats chicken tenders or nuggets with Chick-fil-A sauce. Used the condiments at the hotel food court and now we’re eating dinner!
I made this sauce with the additions mentioned below plus a 1/4 teaspoon of liquid smoke. I did a blind taste test with the store-bought Chik fil a sauce and my sauce. Every one of them thought the homemade sauce was the store-bought one. I love how much this is going to save me!
