This stuff is absolutely delicious! If you make just one new holiday dessert this year, it should be this one.
Ingredients to make saltine toffee candy
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (around 35)
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 10 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
How to make Christmas crack
This recipe is a classic and is so simple to make, but looks impressive!
Step 1: line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: line a sleeve of saltine crackers on the parchment paper.
Step 3: In a sauce pan, bring the butter and brown sugar to a boil.
Boil until thick, stirring constantly. This mixture is the toffee layer, but no candy thermometer is required.
Step 4: Pour the caramel toffee mixture over the top of the saltines, then spread evenly with a rubber spoon or spatula. Bake for a few minutes until bubbly.
Step 5: Once done, remove the saltines from the oven and sprinkle on a bag of semi sweet chocolate chips.
Step 6: Once the chocolate chips have melted, use the back of a spoon to spread the chocolate layer out evenly. The chocolate should be evenly spread to cover all of the crackers.
Now it’s time for toppings! Or you can skip this step and put it right in the fridge. The original version is amazing by itself!

I just made this. Next time I will use milk chocolate morsels; not liking it with the semi-sweet. I topped off with crushed peppermint starlites.
Never use dark brown sugar, it doesn’t work. The butter and sugar separate, When I boiled it longer it burnt
This is soooo good!! I was worried because after I took it out of the oven, I noticed the saltines had moved around on the baking sheet from the boiling toffee floating under the crackers. But it still turned out fine! Yum!
So glad you enjoyed it!
I made it with dark brown sugar, and not sure it came out correctly. The toffee was very thick and didn’t spread when I poured it on. Does that mean I over cooked it?
It may have been the dark brown sugar. Try light next time! I never have a problem with it.
I made this but I used Darigold butter and it didn’t turn out right so I had some cheap butter I used it and also the recipe didn’t say to use light or dark brown sugar well it didn’t turn out right so I had some light sugar and it turned out perfect it was a hit with family and friends. Thank you for the recipe.
Made it for the first time today. You’re right. Super easy and super delicious! Will definitely add to my favorites.
Absolutely loved the Christmas Crack!
Do you have to keep refrigerated? We are traveling with it.
It would be fine for the day not chilled, I have shipped it overnight before.
I made this Christmas crack for my Christmas goodies give away tray. Everybody commented on it saying it was the best part of the tray. Thank you for this great and easy recipe. I will definitely make it again but no too often it’s that good. You can’t just eat one. Or two. Or even three. Lol
Yes, we have that problem in our house too! haha. So glad you enjoyed the Christmas crack!
Looks delicious!!
